Summer hut-to-hut treks
Multi-day hut-to-hut treks are one of the best ways to discover high mountain landscapes with easier logistics than a fully self-supported route. Even so, they require preparation, the right equipment and sensible decisions throughout the trip.
1) Choose a trek that suits the group
Not every route is suitable for everyone. Assess the group’s real experience, fitness level, elevation gain, stage length and terrain difficulty. Before setting off, review the full itinerary and make sure you know where it starts, where it ends and what alternatives exist if something goes wrong.
2) Plan timings and book huts in advance
Work out realistic timings with enough margin for breaks, incidents and pace changes. If you are staying in mountain huts, confirm bookings in advance and check opening times, available services and any access conditions.
3) Pack your backpack properly
Take a map, compass and, as support, a GPS or smartphone with offline maps and enough battery. Add layered clothing, waterproof gear, water, food, a headlamp, a basic first-aid kit, sun protection and everything needed for sudden weather changes in the mountains.
4) Check the weather before every stage
Weather changes quickly in high mountain terrain. Check reliable forecasts and adapt the day’s plan if there is a risk of storms, fog, strong wind or poor visibility. Do not try to stick stubbornly to the original plan if conditions worsen.
5) Act prudently during the trek
Keep the pace suitable for the slowest member of the group, avoid unnecessary separations and always confirm the route at junctions or doubtful sections. If fatigue, uncertainty or navigation problems appear, the sensible decision is often to turn back or rethink the stage.
6) React properly if something happens
If someone suffers from fatigue, cold or an injury, keep them warm, give them water and do not leave them alone. If the incident is serious, call 112 and provide the most accurate location possible using coordinates, map references or location apps.
