At 3,348 m, Monte Perdido is a demanding ascent requiring solid planning, the right gear and good navigation. Use these concise tips to keep risk low.
1) Plan properly
- Check weather (wind, precipitation, freezing level / snow line) and pick a stable day.
- Set conservative timings: start early and avoid finishing in the dark.
- Know total elevation gain and distance; adapt to your group.
2) Essential gear
- Mountain boots, warm layers & rain shell, gloves and hat.
- Headlamp with batteries and a power bank for your phone.
- Helmet recommended due to potential rockfall.
- Plenty of water and energy food.
- In winter conditions: proper training and specific gear (crampons, ice axe, etc.).
3) Navigation
- 1:25,000–1:40,000 map and a reliable GPX track with offline maps on your phone.
- Mark the start/parking point and share live location when possible.
- If disoriented: stop, reassess, return to the last clear point.
4) Safety & emergencies
- If conditions worsen, turn back. The summit will wait.
- In an emergency call 112; use a survival blanket and basic first aid.
