Mushroom Picking is Also “Going to the Mountains”
In autumn there are fewer daylight hours, colder temperatures and even snow or ice in mid and high mountains. Mushroom hunting often gathers many people off marked trails, increasing the risk of getting lost. Follow these guidelines to reduce risks.
1) Plan before you go
- Choose an area and a realistic itinerary according to your fitness level and knowledge of the terrain.
- Tell someone your plan: where you’re going, your car’s location, and expected return time.
- Check the weather forecast (wind, precipitation and snow line / freezing level 0 °C).
- Bring a map 1:25,000–1:40,000 and define clear limits (ravine, track, ridge, firebreak) not to cross.
2) Equip yourself properly
- Fully charged phone + power bank (your phone is also your GPS).
- Headlamp/flashlight and whistle for signaling.
- Warm clothing in bright colors, waterproof jacket, and mountain boots.
- Water and high-energy food (nuts, fruit, chocolate).
3) Avoid getting lost while mushroom picking
- It’s safer not to go alone.
- Finish at least 2 hours before sunset.
- Mark the starting point/parking spot on your phone and check your location regularly.
- If disoriented: stop, go back to your last known point or boundary; don’t keep walking blindly.
4) Useful apps
Install an app to mark your car and return to it (e.g. “Mapas de España”, “Car Finder”, or “Find Parked Car”). You can also share your live location via Google Maps or WhatsApp (requires data connection).
