Canyoning safely
Canyoning is thrilling yet technical. This guide sums up the key points to plan well, carry the right gear and make prudent choices in the Pyrenees canyons.
1) Plan the trip
Pick a canyon that matches the group’s experience and fitness. Check flow and weather, set a realistic schedule, locate escape routes and look for recent info. Train with clubs or licensed guides and tell someone your plan and return time.
2) Gear up
Full wetsuit (~5 mm), certified helmet, booties and grippy footwear. Harness, suitable ropes, anchors and a descender (and know how to use them). First-aid kit, food & water, phone in a dry bag and a whistle.
3) Act prudently
Never go alone; groups of 3+ are safer. Keep assessing the group and conditions—if in doubt, turn back. Manage jumps and slides (depth & obstacles) and avoid entering with high flows or beyond your skill level.
Remember
If underprepared, hire a qualified guide. Technical training and experience are the basis of a safe descent.
